In certain situations it is necessary to use cleats where the standard 6mm offset dimension is increased. For this reason extended versions of all types of both Bolt on and Weld-on cleats are available to suit all section sizes subject to a maximum overall length of 450mm. Extended leg cleats are also available with stiffening ribs added for additional strength. Apart from the extended leg these cleats are dimensionally identical to their standard counterparts and fit as indicated by the diagrams in the “General Information” section of the Introduction page. Extended leg cleats suit purlins, rails and Cee sections and product codes for most available options are listed on this page; refer to the “Unprimed Cleats” section if looking for information on unprimed bolt-on cleats with extended legs. Dimensioned drawings of typical examples in both bolt-on and weld-on formats are included on this page along with full scale CAD drawings in similar style. For examples of extended leg cleats with stiffening ribs added please refer to the section on “Stiffened Cleats” from the menu on the left.
The diagram below shows typical examples of extended versions of bolt-on and weld-on cleats. The “EXTENDED DIMENSION” may be increased from the standard 6mm to suit customer requirements. It must be noted that the maximum available extension for manufacturing purposes is governed by the 450 maximum overall height; this is a manufacturing limitation and cannot be changed.
Note: Check the structural adequacy of extended leg cleats before use – refer to the section on Load data below and to the table of Load data on the Introduction page.
Extended cleats in Weld-on format are supplied without any primer or other form of corrosion protection while bolt-on versions are supplied primed unless otherwise requested. Extended leg cleats are made to order and longer lead times apply.
Load Data:
Structural data for these cleats is included here. The load carrying capacity of a cleat rapidly reduces as the length increase and the structural adequacy must be carefully checked before use. The moment capacities listed should be used for this purpose as extended cleats are not considered in the quick reference table. The addition of stiffeners significantly increases the capacity of these cleats and this may be an option if unstiffened versions are not adequate. Where the addition of stiffeners is still inadequate to offer the required support another form of support such as hot rolled stubs must be used.
